2016 WIP Review

Reviewing 2016 -- It always takes a while to put this together, but is fun to have a visual of what I did work on all in one place.

Key Areas of Time spent being:
- Shop Owner - KISSed Quilts in Grand Coulee, WA
     - entire Northcott Toscana line 135 fabrics; total of 500 fabrics including wide backs
     - Aurifil thread: some 40 wt; mostly 50 wt and always the basics in large cones too.
     - my patterns, other patterns, books, notions, batting, fusible fleece, fusible pellon
 - Long Arm Hand Guided Machine Quilter on a Gammill Optimum + with 10' table
     - pantographs start at 1.5 cents per square inch (psi)
     - customs will change from psi to $25 per hour as of 2017.
     - Minimum $50 per project
     - thread charges - solid $3; variegated $5; specialties $8
     - max in smallest dimension is 96"
     - Note: I like to work with each piece individually and make sure the quilting enhances it
 - Teacher - classes held in nearby classroom space
 - Island Batik Ambassador - monthly challenges resulting in many completions you'll see below
 - Island Batik Designer - 4 new designs this year w/IB
 - Country Register columnist - an article every other month ...picked up by many regional versions
 - EQ Artist --I try to highlight how EQ was used in my designs and write tutorials occasionally

So making samples of new designs or old designs in new fabrics or just because I want to make something..... looks like this:

Completions:

from last year's list:
Geese on the Run (fabrics from Sweet Georgia Peach collection) for Island Batik Winter blog hop; a joint project w/my mom piecing some of it.
- SOLD to Helen this summer when she saw it in the shop as a sample and just had to have it.

Heartfelt Holiday - a design by Heidi Kory of EQ ....adapted to include IslandBatik fabrics and one Maywood Studio fabric for an Island Batik blog hop in February/March 2016. The framing of it to look like an old mounted photo is my own design.

  • Charmed Network - Elementary version - "Charmed Math" - queen size. This is my own design and is the largest version of it (bigger than in the pattern) if I have made.
  •

    New in 2016:
    • StarWars Pillowcase for my cousin's son's birthday. Happy #6 Nathan!

  •  Circle of Geese (enlarged) with Sea Salt Sandy - Feb. blog hop

  • View from the Ahwahnee (Dogwood Window) The dogwood block was originally designed many years ago, but stayed in my 'book' ...then the RAL Seasons (2015) occurred and I got spring, so it made sense to use the block and designed it into a single branch. So, when I had a guild challenge using paint chips of baby blue and baby pink --but I failed to get it done by the deadline I morphed into an entry for the National Park Special Exhibit we had in the area to commemorate the 100 years of National Park Services. The ribbon shown is from the Lincoln County Fair this fall.  Best of Show in its category.

  • Airplane block and Circle of Geese block made into a pillow. Island Batik French Roasted fabrics. Loved working with these. I made the airplane block from my co-authored book, You Can Quilt! and my husband thought the pillow should be two sided! So...I made the Circle of Geese Block from the book as well. Quilted them separately, then bound and put in a zipper on one side--not an easy task and I'm not sure I want to do it again.

    • Geese on the Run - Rainforest Stamp version - #IslandBatik 2016 Spring release - Desert Landscape - I have the geese fabrics as 10" squares --would make 4 runners and a similar background fabric available in the shop. Let me know if you'd like me to ship. This was the official cover design. As you will see I made many versions. Just loved the options and ease of putting this together in so many ways.

    • Rondure - Seaglass version - 2016 Spring release -- per request, I am hosting a Rondure Retreat, April 25-27 for details. There are still a few places left.

    • Winter Blues - Wendy Sheppard design from her book featured in the - March blog hop - Creative new quilts- Projects from precuts or stash.
    • Road Trip -- Geometric Row by Row Experience 2015 with 2016 border fabrics. Border fabric kits still available.

    • Lavender  and Lavender v.2-- both are a Geese on the Run variation

    • Copper and Birds in the Forest -- both are unique Geese on the Run variations. Sharing the backs that I pieced together with extra fabrics I had from the collection.

    • Windy Zig Zags aka Mountain Pass- Marcus Fabrics for McCall's Quick Quilts Oct/Nov 2016 Issue

    • Heartwarming - Row by Row Experience 2016 - Kits still available, including a few with a darker value of 'carpet' (not the rug).

    • Zig Zags at the Lake - Island Batik Lake Life collection. Watch the Island Batik website for a free download of this pattern later this month.

    • Modern (Mini and Scrappy Batik too!) - June 30

    • Winter Bright - July 24

    • August - Snowbirds (A Geese on the Run variation) All fabrics available at the shop. Uses a Gelato/Serenity ombre fabric for the geese and border.

    • IB Splash - Ribbon Box Quilt - Dreaming of Flying (kite panto) - August

    • Summer Nights at Grand Coulee Dam (The Road Home RAL 2016) Pattern available on craftsy.com

    • Sunrise on Lake Roosevelt (IBA Sept Challenge-Bountiful Table Toppers). Pieced this with small bits and a sort of improve cut to create a bargello like curve that the colors ultimately reminded me of the many sunrises on Lake Roosevelt that I can see from my deck.

    • INMQ Challenge - Running Wild

    • Pumpkin Fest (IBA Oct Challenge) - an adapted set of blocks from EQ's Heidi Kory into my own layout design.

    • Snow Drift....Nov IBA challenge - winter wonderland --used a wedge ruler to get the shape

    • Abacus (from the McCalls Oct/Nov Quick Quilts)...Dec IBA challenge - donated to our local Chamber of Commerce to raise funds.

    •  Ornament from PoorHouse Designs

Wreath or Center Piece for the table from Poor House Designs.

Self-binding Receiving Blanket and infinity scarf for the big sis! Baby was born New Year's Eve!

Puddle Jumpers  and Here Fishy Fishy - my new to me niece and nephew! Coordinating pillows were made for each of them as well.

    • Road Trip block 1 - 'We Be Jammin'' for my father-in-law who we took to Glacier National Park in 2015. Hope this will serve as a great memory of our trip. We are running a block of the month program in the shop for the entire quilt with pre-cut/fused pieces directly from McKenna Ryan's Design Studio. This one I selected from fabrics (mostly) in the shop. If you're interested in an entire kit, I just had one subscriber who has decided she needs to put her energies elsewhere and would be interested in selling her kit, let me know if you're interested.

    Joint Projects:
Betty Baerg's Poppy Quilt -- Besides quilting it as a customer quilt, I added the binding.

Free Flight (w/Linda Roberts) - another sample of Geese on the Run

Lake Roosevelt Jelly Roll (w/Linda Roberts) - Raffle Tickets available at basketball home games. There are now 3 different fabric choices in these team colors available at the shop.

Island Batik Ambassadors --- a collaborative effort for our company liaison - Katie ....and her new baby boy!

Lake Roosevelt Raiders - Summer SHARP program

    Ready to Quilt
    • Puddle jumpers take 1 - an adapted design from Tricia Cribbs/Turning Twenty/Friendfolks pattern Gimme 5. It is smaller than any on her pattern and I put a border print in the border and coordinating fabrics in the corners. All fabrics are available in my shop.

    • A Ticket in Hand - with borders added. Panel fabric still available and a few of the other fillers. Let me know if you'd like this fun fabric --great if you're traveled to Europe and want to create a great memory or perhaps you have a young person who will head to Europe for university studies or summer travels.

    • Road trip 2016 - my version of this year's Row by Row Experience horizontal and verticals combined. There will be topically applied elements both during the quilting process and after to complete this.

    • 2016 North Central Washington Shop Hop - Come Fall into Love

    • IB Mini Challenge - this is intended to be more than a quilted item, you'll have to wait!

    So what's next for 2017?
Jury is out on being an IBA next year, but for now, I'm going to give away this strip set of Tinsel (no email bloggers will not be considered), comment by Monday, January 9.

Leave me a comment as to designs that you like to work with or genres of fabric. You're also welcome to continue reading and provide any insights or advice.

I've got a lot on my plate (just look at that list of projects! HA!!!) Lots to consider as to how I spend my energy, but hope to just make the most of it and enjoy it all.

Next Island Batik event is a blog hop starting on January 6. Hope you'll be back to follow along and be inspired.

Here is to hoping that 2017 will be your best yet ...I found a variety of versions of this floating in the internet (EQ posted this version on their Facebook page) and I believe it whole heartedly!

UPDATE: 1/12/17 - Tinsel Strip set went to Lynne S. Congratulations!!
