Island Batik - Sea Salt Sandy

#PTABlog Hop ----Whether at breakfast or at night in Alaska -- Planes, Trains and Automobiles are part of our daily life. Today we're featuring this fabulous Sea Salt-Sandy Island Batik fabric collection.

I couldn't resist when I found these pancake molds at Williams-Sonoma. Just had to make some special pancakes last weekend in anticipation of this post!

 I also got out my AccuQuilt Go! Baby cutter and came up with this little train. It made me think of the aurora borealis in the night sky and the Alaskan train chugging along. (sky fabric is from "Meadow" collection)

When traveling we often get the opportunity to see the wonders of nature. This collection is close to having all colorations of the rainbow, so it makes for a good palette if you are wanting to create something like that. There are large and small motifs of each color.

For the hop I made this pillow I'm calling "Circle of Hope" --it uses 12 of the 20 fabrics plus a background fabric. I blew up the Circle of Geese Block  pattern from our book "You Can Quilt!" (originally designed by Beth M.), so that 1/4 of the pattern still fits on one page. Then added an outer border, just like it talks about on our free layout site www.skillbuildersampler.com

I quilted it with pebbles and C channels, ditching around the geese.

Then put a 2 layer backing on it that overlaps so you can still get the pillow form in, and bound it. Makes it look like piping, but, so quick!

I have always wanted to create a ROYGBV quilt and it finally came together using the Sea Salt Sandy Collection. 

In part, I have these fabrics because of a new design that I released with Island Batik with this collection at market, Fall 2015.





My quilt design is called "Dangling Diamonds" and uses Bella Nonna Design Studio's Boondoggle Rulers. Purchase the pattern via PDF download.

The pattern comes with several bonus designs with Quilted in Honor themes and is available from me directly or ask your local quilt shop to carry them.

Here are a few details of how I quilted it. With all the angles in the piecing, I wanted to create some twirling effects, like they were hanging beads in a door way. I created a card stock template of this shape and traced it into each large background diamond as I went. It is with a purple disappearing ink pen, so it doesn't stay there long.

For the colored diamonds I used matching metallic thread from WonderFil. The center diamond was marked with disappearing ink to give me a registration point for the center, the rest used some straight rulers but a lot of freehand and eyeballing to keep it fairly consistent. Ultimately the key here--loosen the top tension to almost nothing!

In the small diamonds, I used this curved ruler to create a consistent arc, then freehanded the rest.

I used two layers of 80/20 bleached batting. I love the relief where it is NOT quilted.

This quilt was recently part of the juried selections at AQS Phoenix QuiltWeek. What an honor! I have purchased crystals to put on it, but the reality is, they are still in the bag. This quilt will be part of an Island Batik trunk show for the year, so ask your local shop to get it in so that you can see it!

My intent in the quilting was to make it feel like you were looking at a doorway --the old vintage ones that had strings of beads hanging to create an artificial door. The quilting design in the background was trying to give you a twisting feeling of those beads as they spin in the doorway. I had several people come up with that idea on their own when looking at it at the show. Really made me smile!

Great news! I've got all 20 SKUS - 3 bundles of larger than 5" squares. Since this collection was not done as a pre-cut set, where else are you going to get all 20 SKUS this way? Island Batik - Sweet Georgia Peach

Planes, Trains and Automobiles #PTAbloghop - featuring #IslandBatik fabrics coming to a local quilt shop near you, including my own!

Today we're going to Georgia via flying geese!

I think the photo to the right is about half of the collection. A gorgeous array of values in the orange and green families.

Today I'm sharing a test pattern that was made with the Sweet Georgia Peach fabrics. I got my mom involved to test this pattern when she was with me at Christmas. When she had to leave before it was finished, I picked up the pieces and realized even though it was nice to work with one block at a time, it just made for too many unnecessary seams, so I revised it and had another friend test it again.  When I made the pattern with the intended fabric (a new line being released at Spring market in May 2016) I evolved it even further...so you'll have to stay tuned for how the pattern really turns out!

I'm calling this Geese on the Run

These test versions are using 5 values of a single color. With the 'magic' method of making flying geese, I can make 4 at a time. This design uses all sets created! No waste.

Test #1

This runner is quilted on my Gammill with the Curly Maple pantograph (hand guided) from #UrbanElementz with #Aurifil Poly Color 5511. Thermore batting. For table runners, I especially like using Thermore because it shows the quilting, but lets glassware sit flat.

 The 5 geese values have been intentionally chosen to 'fade' into the background.

 

Test #2 - On this one, just the geese are made with Sweet Georgia Peach. I love the name that my tester Linda R. came up with -- "Free Flight" (although this wasn't her thought that created the name, I couldn't help but think, hey she got the fabrics for free, its a perfect name! ;-) HA!!). You'll have your chance to get some for free below.



 

 

The background and border is made with fabrics I have available in the shop (#4 and #5 below).

This time the geese are some from light to dark since the background is darker. It might also have worked to do two different colors; one color with 3 values; and a second color similar to the background with two values.

The backing is a flannel wideback I have available for sale in the shop (I can ship). It is a greyish-greenish pattern and just fit this beautifully. I quilted this, hand guided, on my #Gammill long-arm with the Forest Floor pantograph from #UrbanElementz. 80/20 batting. Signature variegated Grassy Green thread.

This design could work nicely as a bed runner too.

Island Batik - French Roasted

What a fun theme for a blog hop, right?

Today we're all about the planes and feature the fabric collection:



I got acquainted with this collection when the Island Batik Ambassadors worked on a joint project as a special gift to Kathy Engle to celebrate a milestone of service to this industry.





These are the two blocks that I made.

 Here was the result hanging at Fall 2015 market along with 3 of the many who worked on it.

I have now made a couple of my own projects with fabric that I had leftover and added a few other bits that coordinated. The first project is 'Flightline'.

These blocks are from Chapter 8 - Curves - in our book "You Can Quilt! Building Skills for Beginners".

Here I am using an arc ruler to assist in doing the stitch-in-the-ditch work in the flowering snowball block.











The scrappy 1" x 1" sashing square strip sets and border elements reminded me of the lights running down a runway and the idea of the name 'Flightline' came to mind. These bits are made mostly from other Island Batik collections that had been shared with me as an Island Batik Ambassador.

All 3 blocks kind of lend themselves to look like propellers, so it seemed to fit. For a lot of my utility projects, I like to do bindings by machine. Here is a closeup of the binding and corners on this one.

Could be used as a table runner, bed runner, or perhaps a chest of drawers topper.

I then wondered if I had enough leftover bits to make an airplane. This block also comes from our book and is included as a 'bonus' block on the enclosed DVD.

Subtle details---on the wing is my 'signature'. I typically stitch out lips (a small portion of my logo) and the year. Given the dark fabric, it is difficult to see it, and I used the wing space as a way to make a bold statement. On the elevator (at the tail) I've put our town name, "Grand Coulee".

My husband loves airplanes and other flying machines, so I showed it to him and said I'd be making it into a pillow for our couch. He suggested that the pillow be 2 sided. So....I put my thinking cap back on and figured out I had just enough fabric to make a Circle of Geese block (also from our book - Ch. 7) as long as I used a background from the Sweet Georgia Peach collection that I also had on hand.





















The trick was to put it together with a zipper! But I really wanted to 'bind' or put a piped edge of dark blue on it. This proved to be quite a stumbling block. There are a variety of ways to put a zipper on a pillow, but none with the result that I was looking for. I wanted to hide the zipper at one edge.

Ultimately, I added piping and somehow got the zipper close to it. I wanted to share a tutorial because I had come up with some genius method, but it didn't happen, so just saying that I don't recommend two sided quilted pillows with a removable pillow form.
