Alpine Nights in Alpine Ice

Welcome to my stop on the Island Batik Four Seasons Blog Hop. We're featuring their beautiful new seasonal lines and this week is WINTER!  Today we're showcasing Alpine Ice that will be shipping in April to quilt shops like Hancock's of Paducah and Red Roxy Quilt Co in Decorah, IA.

Here it is hanging at Fall Market (Oct 2017) to show attendees a first glimpse of the line.

Island Batik has the entire collection of Alpine Ice  individually posted and can be viewed by all. Shops can order it to then share with interested customers.

As a designer that likes to use multiple values of a single color, I was excited when given the opportunity to design with this collection. The stripe fabric had such fun motifs, that I used it as inspiration to blow up each design and create blocks and rows to feature them.

This is a multi-block design and includes a simple snowball made in various values to create depth across the row; half square triangles with a similar value effect; paper pieced diamonds and stars; appliqued trees and fussy cut motifs from the two stripe prints to separate pieced rows and add a special border.

There are two colorways within this collection --grey and blue. There is a sister collection called Alpine Jingle that has gold/red/green colors and similar motifs. Watch for that tomorrow on the blog hop.

I focused on the grey colorway.



















In my patterns, when there are multiple block designs, I like to instruct how to make each block in what I deem the most efficient way possible. Using Electric Quilt software, it is easy to get the necessary elements for each method.

1. Snowballs - rotary cut and simple stitching.

2. Mountains using half square triangles - rotary cut and simple stitching --well I give you a little trick.

3. Paper Pieced Diamonds with some mylar template assistance.

4. Paper Pieced 6 pointed stars

5. Appliqued trees using a mylar template.

Fussy cutting the stripe fabric gives unique sashings that mimic the pieced rows.

This would make a great learning quilt, start off easy and build on your skills to finish it.
