Alpine Nights in Alpine Ice

Welcome to my stop on the Island Batik Four Seasons Blog Hop. We're featuring their beautiful new seasonal lines and this week is WINTER!  Today we're showcasing Alpine Ice that will be shipping in April to quilt shops like Hancock's of Paducah and Red Roxy Quilt Co in Decorah, IA.

Here it is hanging at Fall Market (Oct 2017) to show attendees a first glimpse of the line.

Island Batik has the entire collection of Alpine Ice  individually posted and can be viewed by all. Shops can order it to then share with interested customers.

As a designer that likes to use multiple values of a single color, I was excited when given the opportunity to design with this collection. The stripe fabric had such fun motifs, that I used it as inspiration to blow up each design and create blocks and rows to feature them.

This is a multi-block design and includes a simple snowball made in various values to create depth across the row; half square triangles with a similar value effect; paper pieced diamonds and stars; appliqued trees and fussy cut motifs from the two stripe prints to separate pieced rows and add a special border.

There are two colorways within this collection --grey and blue. There is a sister collection called Alpine Jingle that has gold/red/green colors and similar motifs. Watch for that tomorrow on the blog hop.

I focused on the grey colorway.

In my patterns, when there are multiple block designs, I like to instruct how to make each block in what I deem the most efficient way possible. Using Electric Quilt software, it is easy to get the necessary elements for each method.

1. Snowballs - rotary cut and simple stitching.
2. Mountains using half square triangles - rotary cut and simple stitching --well I give you a little trick.

3. Paper Pieced Diamonds with some mylar template assistance.
4. Paper Pieced 6 pointed stars

5. Appliqued trees using a mylar template.

Fussy cutting the stripe fabric gives unique sashings that mimic the pieced rows.

This would make a great learning quilt, start off easy and build on your skills to finish it.

Loved my #Aurifil threads for piecing and quilting! Here are a few close up shots.

Patterns will be available as fabrics are shipping in April. If you're interested in getting one and would appreciate video tutorials for each row and fussy cutting the sashings and border, please let me know in the comments below. How about pre-printed paper foundations and the mylar templates?

Don't miss out on these giveways as well!

Fabrics for the border and sashings for the Alpine Nights quilt and a pattern. To be shipped some time by April (when quilt shops will begin receiving fabrics). US only entries. I'll pick a 2nd winner as well for a PDF copy of my pattern --open to anyone who is interested.

Use this Rafflecopter to sign-up for the giveaway.  Good through January 16 (PST).

  8. Beautiful quilt. I am surprised how much I am liking the monochromatic quilts being designed for this hop. I don't generally watch video tutorials; my computer is too far from my sewing machine. I prefer good old fashioned still pictures and descriptions so I can take them wherever I want. :)

  17. I usually prefer written tutorials except for techniques I haven't tried before, so I'm not sure I'd need one, but it might be helpful with the mylar templates, I suppose.

  29. Beautiful quilt! I am always interested in quilting videos--I do much better when I see something being done rather than reading about it.

  30. Love your quilt. I don't watch many videos.

  31. Your quilt is a beauty! I prefer learning and following through pictures and words. Videos are nice if they are short and not too chatty.

  32. I love row quilts and cannot pick one row I like better than the others. I like a video when I feel the written directions are vague or difficult. I've watched some videos over and over until the light bulb went on! I do hate to waste my time reinventing a pattern if there is already information out there. Videos are also good to pick up little hints that aren't included in the pattern.

  33. While I have the skills to make this quilt, I always appreciate video tutorials for that secret trick that makes the piecing that much easier. Love the quilt & your use of fabrics!

  40. I prefer written tutorials. This is a stunning quilt. Thanks.

  41. I enjoy watching quilt tutorials just to ovbserve techniques. But for something that I am actually going to make, I prefer written tutorials that I can follow at my own pace (which is sometimes kind of plodding) :)Thanks for sharing this beautiful quilt!

  42. Now this quilt is just FUN! :)
I prefer written tutorials...easier to keep notations and directions in same place as my fabric stash! :)

  43. i love this quilt, row quilts are so fun. i would be interested in pdf pattern.

  44. Beautiful quilt. I don’t usually like video tutorials. I find it easier to follow a paper pattern.

  45. I love your quilt! Beautiful fabrics, too.

  46. I don't follow a whole lot of video tutorials. Sometimes I like them as a quick overview of how the quilt will be constructed, but generally I am more visual in the sense that I like to focus on what I am going to be making for as long as I need to rather than watch it go by on a video.

  47. Wow, this is amazing! Thanks for sharing. I don't usually use a video tutorial, but they have often been very helpful when I'm stuck on something.
