Design Wall Monday

We're in the middle of the big Island Batik - Seaside Summer Blog Hop and I'm going to be posting again on September 1...but here is my initial layout on my design wall for that post.

I'm using Cloud 9 Fabrics - Ribbon Box Quilt pattern and Island Batik's Splash fabrics.

This past weekend was my local county fair (Lincoln Co., WA) and I had a few of my own quilts as well as several customer quilts.

Was nice to be recognized for some good work.

Three quilts got best of show in their category (one was mine, and the other two I quilted), one of my customers' got people's choice and the other also got an Honorable Mention ribbon from INMQ (a Machine Quilter's regional group).

All six of my entries got at least a blue ribbon and of the other 6 customer entries, 4 blue and 2 red.

Whoo Hoo! Fun to be recognized and learn from the judge specific things I can continue to work on--if I choose! :-) HA! Utility quilts just don't seem to need the miter stitched down in the binding, what do you think?

I have awarded the two giveaways to the first two that have come by the shop for their copy of the magazine and Marcus Fabrics after the release of my pattern 'Mountain Pass' in the Oct/Nov McCall's Quick Quilts issue now on newsstands. Congrats Karren P. and Carol E.!

I did finish this up last week--my new design 'Geese on the Run' now put into blue/white/grey fabrics so I've called this version 'Snowbirds'.

This is on my quilting table--Labyrinth Walk --a customer's quilt....and I plan to teach the piecing of it this new season. If you're interested, let me know!

Imminently happening .....this is a sneek peek of a part of my row that will be in a row along that starts Sept. 6. ....the Road Home (see side bar).

Mountain Pass available in McCall's Quick Quilts

Always room for another 'first' in your life, right?
I now have a pattern published in a magazine! One of my simplest patterns, but hey --you have got to start somewhere, right? Today I'm (UPDATED TO ARCHIVED POST) guest blogging over at the McCall's blog all about it, including a giveaway.  There are also some critical images that help in positioning the pieces so that you can keep your points. Hope you'll take a moment and learn about my journey. There is also a very special story.

Here is my own 'geeky' moment in the grocery store when I discovered it on the newsstand!

The first two individuals to stop by my shop and mention this will receive a free copy of the magazine and some yardage from this Marcus Fabrics collection - Rustic Winds.

I'm open 10am-5pm through Sept. 6 --closed Sat, Sun and Labor Day. After that call ahead!

And here is a sneek peek of another set of fabrics that I used to make this pattern in batiks. It is a whole new collection from Island Batik coming later this year! It will be called Zig Zags on the Lake.

Island Batik - showcasing Seashore in Rondure

Welcome Back! I hope you've enjoyed the three collections already featured this week.

I'm excited to share with you a new pattern of mine that has had quite a journey - Rondure
- featuring the Seashore fabrics.

The 3d effect comes from skewing the two blocks used in the quilt design on the golden ratio. There is a more complete write up with a variety of other colorations made by my testers here.

This particular quilt I'm calling 'Seaglass' (the pattern is Rondure --French for graceful sphere). I convinced my sister, who lives on the Central California Coast (where I grew up), to take a few shots on/near the beach.

Summer Seaside Snack
7 layer dip
Refried Beans, Cheese, Salsa, Black Olives, Avocado, Sour Cream, Green Onions

And a back made with 2 of these beautiful fabrics for an Island Batik Ambassador group project. Congrats Katie!

The journey to make this into a pattern has been long, but I'm excited that it is now available if you are up for the challenge. It is not for a beginner, but is broken down into 10 steps that are very doable.

I'm planning a 3-day intensive class the last week of April, 2017. Pattern available here.

I have a small bundle of fabrics from the Seashore collection available for a giveaway. Please use this Rafflecopter to register. Your email will be added to my monthly newsletter.

The question to answer is: to learn something new, would you prefer to -- 1) watch an online class; 2) take a class in person; 3) just follow a pattern.

The giveaway is open for 1 week from the posting date. Thanks for coming by!

Island Batik - Seaside Summer Blog Hop - Introducing Rain Forest and my new pattern - Geese on the Run

Welcome to the Seaside Summer Blog Hop brought to you by Island Batik Ambassadors from all over the world!

Throughout this BlogHop are giveaways, tutorials, inspiration and a few summer beach snack recipes as well!

I'll have at least 3 different collections throughout this hop to inspire you with, but today we're focusing on the Rain Forest collection.
This design is a pattern called Geese on the Run and
this particular version I called "Desert Landscape".

This is an easy runner that can teach you two ways to make flying geese. I've never made so many versions of a single pattern. I enjoyed making it so much and had so many ideas with this fabric collection, I just couldn't stop.

When you make scrappy flying geese for a project, there is one technique, and if you want to just use 5 colors/values then you can do it with another technique. Either way, there are lots of border options too. All of these are included in the pattern.

I have limited quantity of Stacks (10" x 10") available my shop (the fabrics used as the scrappy geese are all in the pre-cut set of 'stacks' or 'stamps' in this Rainforest collection) and yardage choices for background, borders, binding and backings. A stamp set will yield 1 runner of geese and stack set will yield 4 runners of geese! You can purchase them now from my KISSed Quilts shop, I'm willing to ship!

Desert Landscape               Lavender (v.1 and 2)                                     Copper   Birds in the Forest

A detailed shot of my quilting on Desert Landscape. The other runners I used edge-to-edge designs. So there are lots of options.

Summer Beach Snack   Next time you're headed to the beach, this might be the perfect runner to show off your wonderful snacks.  I grew up on the central coast of California and the beach was often cool, not hot! So, my memories of the beach are from roasting corn in the coals of a fire. Wrap a set of 4 ears of corn (flat) with two layers of tin foil and once the fire has some good coals, put the ears right in there. Let them 'bake' for four minutes, using a pitch fork going in underneath the coals, scoop the ears out and flip them over for another four minutes. Then remove with the pitch fork --the coals fall between the tines of the pitch fork. Have a cube of butter on hand to roll the corn in and the sand is about as good as it gets for salt! ...or you can salt it! ha! or add bits of seasoning or cheese. Yummy!!!

Interested in the pattern? It is available from me (I'm willing to ship) or from select quilt shops that carry Island Batik fabrics. If they don't have it yet, ask them to order it!

Below you can register for a couple of different giveaways ...one just from me and another that will be part of the entire bloghop from Island Batik. Be sure to enter both based on your interest!

Here is a complete line up of our blog hop.

*through life's journey, KISSed Quilt's owner, Marlene, has respected the fourth commandment of keeping the 7th day Sabbath as a day of rest and worship (Exodus 20:8-11). This has made a positive difference in her life and would recommend it for everyone. As a result, the business is closed on Saturday. The passport stamp and free shop hop gift will be available at the door (even though the shop will appear closed) during Saturday's shop hop hours. She hopes that you'll stop by another day of the shop hop or call ahead at another time when it is convenient for you. Thank you for your understanding and patronage.
